DSDN 171 Blog 1

Hi there my name is Brett Orchard and I was born and raised in Blenheim, a small town set in the South Island.

Entering into the School of Design from small town Blenheim is an exciting new step in my lifelong ambition to become a well-equipped and skilled industrial designer whom shall excel in my field of expertise. I started creating and crafting works of Art through my high school years, my teacher always pushed the idea of making a career from doing what I love ever since I first stepped into her classroom, another aspect of my inspiration is seeing first-hand the senior design students working towards a similar career path, after looking through and admiring Kohen Judd’s work whilst at high school, I hoped to see myself working at his level or higher in the near future, this has always kept me motivated and focused for achieving my set goals.
A new learning curve for me was not just creating something from scratch, but using professional Artist models processes with your own creativity and idea’s, into the piece to create new, innovative and breath-taking work with entirely original outcomes, this technique has broadened my understanding of design and how crucial outside influences are to your personal projects. At Design School, I hope to gain the knowledge and confidence in my ability whilst making links into the design industry, I realise this is the last step I have to take to achieve my long awaited goal to becoming a well-established designer in the Industrial Design community and hopefully one day owning my own design company.

I know that this path I take will not be easy, but I’m enthusiastic and eager to open my mind to the opportunities awaiting me these next few years.
